Joint Replacement: The Role of Your CoachYour loved one is about to have joint replacement surgery. There is a lot you can do to help your friend orfamily member through surgery and recovery. Follow this checklist for tips to be a coach for your loved one.DO: Go to all pre-operative meetings with their healthcare provider. Write down any instructions to follow andask questions. If you and your loved one decide that recovering at home is the best option: DO: Help toprepare your house before surgery. If possible, create a living space on one floor to avoid stairs.DO: Pre-cook several meals before surgery and freeze them for easy reheating later. Be sure to stock thepantry before surgery. On the day of surgery: DO: Drive your friend or family member to the hospital and helpthem settle in. Let them talk about their feelings, listen, and give positive reassurance.During the first days after surgery:DO: Help your loved one get in and out of bed safely. Help them get moving by taking short walks. Give themphysical support if needed but also emotional support. When your loved one is ready to be discharged from thehospital: DO: Attend the discharge meeting. Take notes on medications, physical activity restrictions, and thedate of the follow-up appointment.In the days and weeks following joint replacement surgery: DO: Help your loved one with exercises on aregular basis. Drive them to their physical therapy sessions if needed. Make sure all their medications aretaken as prescribed.Your role as a coach is to support your loved one through recovery.
